Well, our design goal was to require no training at all. From the earliest prototypes, we were trying to design an experience so that people could sit down in front of Office 2007 and be effective right away at getting their work done. One of the reasons we didn't go more radical on the overall design was that we wanted to make the product comfortable to use--after all, at the end of the day, it's still Microsoft Office.
Jensen's job, of course, is to promote Office 2007. What he says may be true for those who have never used Microsoft Office, but he left out a few things.
Those who will have the most difficulty adapting are the great masses of office workers who have learned how to perform a dozen or so common tasks in Excel or Word, and they do them day after day. These people, for the most part, will experience serious frustration. In many cases, these workers don't even look at the "big picture." Rather, their task is broken down into a series of very specific steps that they've learned over the years. What happens when those steps no longer work?
Another potential source of frustration is the "deprecated features." Anyone who has followed the betas of Office 2007 know that quite a few features have been removed. Other features seem to be missing, but they are still available if you take some additional steps and them to your Quick Access Toolbar. The typical user won't know this.
Another problem. There are millions of customized Office apps in use that use toolbars and/or custom menus. If you load such a file in Office 2007, your familiar menu modifications and toolbars do not appear. Well, they are still there, but the user must know to click the Add-Ins tab. Then, all of the toolbars and menu modifications are visible, stuffed into a single unorganized chunk. Toolbars are no longer free-floating, and you may need to do some serious scrolling to even find the toolbar button you're looking for. And once a toolbar is displayed, there's no way to hide it.
I may be wrong, but I think it's unlikely that many large companies are going to perform massive upgrades to Office 2007. Those that do will require training, regardless of what Microsoft says.
Are the new Office 2007 features worth the effort and frustration? For some, yes. For most, no.

Microsoft Office 2010 along with three other products reached the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) milestone. This announcement was made at “The official blog of the Microsoft Office product development group” at Technet by Takeshi Numoto, the Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Office.
Office 2010 has reached the RTM milestone alongside Visio 2010, Project 2010 and SharePoint 2010. The flagship Office suite from Microsoft saw the public beta release of its latest version in November last year. Since then, more than 5,000 partners and testers have continuously evaluated the product. Stats at the Office blog indicate that the testing of Office 2010 was the largest ever for a software product.
As far as availability of the final product is concerned, Volume License customers with active Software Assurance will be able to download the latest version from April 27. Others may get their hands on it from 1st of May onwards.
This time, Office 2010 will have a virtual launch at the 2010 event website. You can expect to see product demos, customer and partner testimonials, and interviews with product managers and executives at this virtual launch.
Even though Office 2010 along with SharePoint and other 2010 products is available online only two weeks from now, it will hit the stores only in the US in June 2010. The India launch is also expected to be sometime in June this year.

Microsoft Office 2010 for retail consumers sometime

Following a public beta with more than 7.5 million participants--three times the beta participation for Office 2007--Microsoft has released it to manufacturing (RTM). Google may have drawn, but Microsoft is aggressively taking on Google on its home turf with Office 2010.
The RTM milestone means that the next-generation flagship productivity suite will be available to begin burning retail discs and for OEM manufacturers to begin developing images that include Office 2010 to be pre-installed on new PC's. Takeshi Numoto, corporate vice president for Microsoft Office, declared on the"RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone."
Above and beyond the normal evolution of features and advancement of the user experience that are to be expected with a major update to the Microsoft Office productivity suite, Microsoft is also making some bold moves to defend the suite against Google, and, in fact, take the fight into Google's back yard--the Internet.
With Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft is including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Users can store files in the cloud with the Windows Live SkyDrive, and seamlessly transition from working with the Office 2010 Web Apps, to working with the same files using the more comprehensive features of their desktop equivalents.

That is great for those who have the discretionary cash to buy Office 2010 for the desktop, but what about the users who don't? Well Microsoft thought of that too. That is why Microsoft is --sort of an Office 2010 Lite--that will be pre-installed on Windows-based PC's instead of the ubiquitous, but rarely used, Microsoft Works that users are accustomed to.
The two primary advantages that Google has capitalized on with Google Docs are cost--it's hard to beat free--and cloud-based availability. With Office 2010, Microsoft is competing head-to-head with Google in these two areas while also leveraging the overwhelming dominance and popularity of Microsoft Office.
The availability of Microsoft Office 2010 will be rolled out in phases. The productivity suite will be available to, followed by availability to Microsoft's Software Assurance licensing customers, then volume license customers without Software Assurance, followed by the general availability of Microsoft Office 2010 for retail consumers sometime in June.

Microsoft Office 2010 to the public

It’s probably not a coincidence that Google is making a significant upgrade to Docs the same week that Microsoft Office 2010 to the public. Not to be left out, the search giant has modified sharing, visibility and the interface for Google Docs, which is also part of its Office 2010-competitor, Google Apps.
Google is now giving users more clear cut options for sharing documents: private; anyone with a link; or public on the web. All documents start out as private, with the creator as the sole administrator. You can then share your document by setting it as “Anyone with the link,” which allows anyone who knows the web address or URL of that doc to view it. You can set your document as ‘public on the web,’ which allows anyone to find the document on the web. Google says that Public docs are automatically indexed by search engines so they may appear in search results.
Google is also enhancing the visibility options for docs, making it fairly clear to the administrator which document is set to private, semi-private or public. The options now appear next to every doc title and in the docs list. You can also see the full list of editors and viewers by clicking on the ‘visibility option’ next to the doc’s title or on the Share button. And Google has improved the sharing interface and allows you to reset any link you’ve shared, so that you can move a document back to private even if you’ve shared the document.
It’s probably wise that Google has improved its sharing options, considering that Microsoft is now attacking Google in the cloud with the Office 2010. It should be interesting to see if the use of Word will gain traction in the cloud as Office 2010 is rolled out more widely.

Office 2007 with a product key or serial number

Most suites or programs of Microsoft Office 2007 allows user to evaluate the product. The trial version of 2007 Microsoft Office system can be installed by using a 25-character trial product key available from Microsoft while you, and you can use the Microsoft Office 2007 suite or program with full functionality for 60 days.
You may have the Office 2007 CD and are able to Office 2007 without entering product key. However, Office 2007 will work in reduced functionality mode, where it’s effectively just a viewer for Office. Beside, if you forget the trial product key, or don’t wish to register a Windows Live ID to get the trial key, here’s the trick to activate Office 2007, or more correctly, bypass the activation of Office 2007 60 days trial, and making the “trial” word disappear from the Office title at the top and suppress activation and trial expiry prompt.
Note that to use Microsoft Office 2007 beyond 60 days trial period, you need to purchase a valid license for it, available from or most computer retail store.
To use this hack to crack activation on Office 2007, you need to install Office 2007 without any serial number or product key. If you have installed Office 2007 with a product key or serial number, do the following to clean remove Office 2007 of product key:
   1. Close all Microsoft Office.
   2. If there is more than one registry entries or subkeys that reference Microsoft 12.0 registration, open up each subkey, and then identify the product by the ProductName value data until you locate the subkey for the product which you want to remove the existing product license key.
   3. Once found the correct registry subkey, delete the following values:

Microsoft Office 2007 will hit corporate desktops this month while consumers like you and me will be able to buy the full retail version of Office Vista starting January 2007.
It's just a matter of few weeks before we start exchanging documents written in Word 2007, spreadsheets charted in Excel 2007 or presentations prepared with PowerPoint 2007. Is your Microsoft Office version ready to handle this ?
A new version of Microsoft Office means new [or better] file formats and file extensions - therefore documents written with Office 2007 programs won't open directly on computers running Office 2003, XP, 2000 or Office 97.
What's the alternative for users who won't immediately migrate to Office 2007 ? Well, there's absolutely no reason to worry about such issues. The good guys from the Microsoft Office team at Redmond have created some wonderful document converters, viewers and other useful add-ons that won't let old Office users feel paralyzed in any form.

Most of us are used to working with Sharepoint using Office 2007 and we are all quite familiar with it by now, but it is fairly obvious that PDF documents have been used for many years and we all love using them. It is therefore inevitable that we will end up putting them and using them in Sharepoint at some point or another.
The only problem is that Microsoft does not support this file format in any of it's UI interfaces even though it can be uploaded to a document library due to the fact that it is a binary file. The purpose behind this blog therefore is to show you how to improve the user experience using PDF files in the following areas:
    * Indexing and searching PDF documents using Sharepoint Search.
    * Creating  a PDF icon on Sharepoint that is displayed in the user interface.
    * Installing the PDF add-on for Office 2007 that allows you to save PDF files directly from Office 2007.

    * Index the actual content inside the documents stored in Sharepoint
    * Index external locations outside Sharepoint like file shares, Exchange Public folders and even databases.
    * Index the content inside documents located on these external locations.
It is like having your own private Search engine on your network just like you would search on the Internet. The problems start coming in with the ability of the Search engine to index the content inside documents. This is done via an IIS extension called I-filters and they need to be installed on the Sharepoint server where the Search engine is configured.

Donna Lynes-Miller is Founder and President of Gourmet Station, the premise of the website is that the company brings a fine dining experience to the customer.  Gourmet Station sells fine meals and accessories on its website.

Donna described how everything on the blog has to be consistent with the brand.  She moderates the comments and makes sure those comments are consistent with the brand.  No profanity or unrelated comments are allowed on the blog. Donna explained that “everything has got to be very buttoned up, we have a very buttoned up brand, and we have a very upscale brand, very upscale, well educated customers. So anything that goes out there has to be consistent with that.” The blog also allows the company to discuss their content in a laid back tone.  That content has produced higher rankings on search engines and helped to increase traffic to the blog by 10%.

Donna believes it to be important that the people who write on the blog are knowledgeable about food and wine.  The blog's readers are looking for ideas around food, drink, and entertainment.

The blog has helped Donna's company add content to their website on the topics and products the company is focused on providing.  Also, the blog has given Donna the ability to place content that they otherwise would not have been able to put on their website.  Donna said it was important that a company covers all of the topics they wish to cover in their blog posts, and to categorize those topics by keyword.

The Gourmet Station blog has achieved a number two ranking on the keyword "gourmet dinners" in Yahoo! The blog has played a big part in helping the company to achieve that ranking.  According to Donna, the blog has also helped establish the company's brand and provide more sales conversions by making a "passionate connection" with readers.

The topic that generates the most conversation and interaction from readers on the blog is romance.  Donna said that made sense, as the search volumes for romance and dinner have a great connection.

Donna selects the content of the posts by season.  Donna said the blog has 14 categories, and the company always has a recent post in each of the categories.

Donna recommends a company have a strategy before starting to blogging.  Her company has two strategies: to fill their categories with content and to increase they’re ranking on search engines.

When it’s mud, not salt, that keeps your car from sparkling in the Minnesota sunshine, us northerners know winter is on its way out. While there are a select few hardy Minnesota folk that really love the cold weather, most of us count down the days to our favorite season: summer. I, on the other hand, count down the days to my favorite season: baseball.
My Dad had tickets but was out of town for the home opener. I’m his only offspring in the Twin Cities, so I got his tickets. I brought Mr. Katt, my boyf, EVEN though he is a life-long Brewers fan… Love makes you forgive things like that.
For me, baseball is as much about watching Thome dominate at the plate as it is about the grub. When Target Field replaced the Dome last season, I was beyond psyched for the food. Big press about Murray’s steak sandwiches, Kramarczuk’s sausages, the decadent Vincent burger– ambitious, even gourmet, food from local names. But after a full season eating my way through the ballpark fare, I discovered something about myself…
Who needs “gourmet” at a ball game? I’m sticking with the classics. It’s not that the food is bad per se (though what’s with Kramarczuk’s, which serves some good fare, not offering spicy mustard? Bummer!), but to me baseball is all about tradition. When else does a simple hot dog, peanuts, and cold, crappy lite beer taste so good?
My fave dog is the cheapest in the park– maybe $3.75? It arrives on a soft, squishy bun (not a hard, dry one). It’s small and probably supposed to be for kids, and they sell it at one lone concession stand on the main floor concourse, behind home plate. It was so difficult to find at the game that Mr. Katt went ahead and bought this foot-long dog, along with the Leinie’s cheese curds, served in a little cardboard canoe. Like I said, he’s a Brewers fan. It did the trick.

Other highlights from the stadium included sunny weather, a first pitch from a berry, berry good ballplayer Tony Oliva (who stepped in when Hall of Famer and all around amazing guy Harmon Killebrew couldn’t make it due to his treatments for esophageal cancer… please keep him and his family in your thoughts), Carl Pavano’s mustache, the Twins beating the A’s after a pretty uneventful game, and learning that Hrbek’s bar serves beer well-after the game wraps, unlike the rest of the stadium that closes up shop after the 7th inning. Leave it to Hrbie to keep the party going.

Low point? Maybe this incredibly pathetic “Farmers Market” stand. Overly ripe bananas, oranges, two crummy apples and a lone lemon (why?). Seriously, Twins Territory can do better than this. Heck, a gas station does better than this. We do have farmers in Minnesota, right?

Though the Twins have had a slow start to the 2011 season, we’ve never been much for sprinting right out of the gate. We’re marathoners, and I think this will be a great season for us.
Who’s your team, and what’s your favorite ballpark food? Oh and by the way, Andrew is both a Yankees fan AND a Twins fan (don’t ask me how this is even possible), and his favorite food at Target Field is the Throwback Dog, Kramarczuk’s sausage, and the gelato.

The windy road in Atenas that took us up to Los Altos de Naranjo, as the locals call it, had a breathtaking view of coffee, bananas, sugar cane, and other crops planted on its steep hillsides for miles. We stopped along the way to ask directions from a few folks, and we kept gawking at our surroundings like two betwitched kids.
Eventally we spotted a little building on the left-side of the road that looked a school. No visible signs announcing its presence, but it was the right place.
The director of la Escuela Nueva de los Altos, a bright, competent young woman, beautiful inside and out, had kindly agreed to meet me in the morning. It's the school our company Primal Echo wants to adopt as part of an emerging social development initiative in Costa Rica we call Lily Moon Sustainability Project that we aim to create where our producers, artisans, and the children of a rural community will receive 1% of our net sales toward pragmatic, educational, and inspirational assistance that empowers them become more self-sustaining. Another 1% will be donated to a project in our company's hometown of Fort Collins, CO, in the US called the Conscious Consumer Trust, a community-based social equity think tank that I'll share about in future entry.
Meanwhile, back in Atenas, Luz Angelica, a fitting name indeed for the escuela's director, introduced me to the 20 or so students in her classroom. As soon as I walked in, the young and uniformed kiddo's got up, and, with no prompting from their director who also doubles as a teacher, chimed in unison, "Buenos dias, senora, como estas?" (Good morning m'am, how are you?). I'm sure I was glowing, I felt the warmth on my cheeks, registering high on the thirlled meter. I thanked them and asked how they were doing. They didn't miss a beat and responde right back. Ah the simple pleasures of manners and greetings shared with the innocent!
The next 1.5 hours I spent with Luz Angelica were devoted to the nuts and bolts of learning about each other. I filmed as much as I could, got a tour of their small, tidy school, with hanging colorful art on the backs of old cardbord boxes used as canvasses. I heard a bit on their resource conservation, recycling, and promotion of wild species conservation through parades and was introduced to some of the teachers and the lunch lady's daughter. Speaking of comestibles, this little guy came into the classroom where we were talking during the kids' recess.
I learned the scoop on the school, students, classes, joys, and challenges. We discussed how we might be able to partner with them, what needs and priorities we ought to consider teaming up on. Laptops, instruments, and clothing and school supply assistance for seven of the poorest children swirled amidst our enthused conversation. She spoke highly of the quality of their students, the teachers, and the parents. Of their hope to build new bathrooms that are up to code, converting an area into the enclosed English classroom, and building a more adequate play area/activities hall that could also be used for the bigger school and community functions to help raise needed funds for the school.
I explained to Luz Angelica that we'll need to start with small project assistnace, as our own young company is gearing up to start selling our first batch of our Sole (pronounced So-leh) organic coffee line, coffee culture artisan postcard sets, and chocolate truffles made with organic cocoa from Ticolandia. The director was as kind and understanding. I was elated to hear of her interest in developing this new partnership with Primal Echo.
Before I left, a kiddo walked in with a homemade sweet tortilla that sounded it was from the cook's daughter for Luz Angelica. He came back with another one for me.
By the time I left the school, I felt like I had gained a younger sister, as empassioned about her work with those kids and improving the opportunities for them, as I feel about working with them.
